Educational Pursuits and Passion Discovery
Karla’s educational journey was marked by her dedication to knowledge and community service. She began as a volunteer at United Achievers Brampton, where she significantly contributed to senior programs, starting with the Lunch and Play program. Her success led to a request for her to facilitate the agency’s after-school program. Karla then attended Humber College, earning a certification in Costume and Immigration with a focus on cultural identity and integration. She later graduated with honors from Sheridan College with a degree in Social Service Work, specializing in Immigration Services. Her advocacy and academic excellence made her the first Latina in her college to be invited to attend the Canadian Council for Refugees that year.
Professional Growth and Development
Armed with a strong educational background and a passion for positive change, Karla began her career with an internship at Ontario’s Intercultural Services, where she played a key role in community integration efforts. Her collaborative spirit and fundraising skills united her college community, bridging cultural divides. Her dedication caught the eye of MP Gurbax Malhi, who enlisted her support during his 2008 campaign. Karla also volunteered and worked with another government agency, earning a nomination from the MPP for Etobicoke North for her leadership at Albion Neighborhood Services. As a single parent of four, Karla balanced her responsibilities with incredible strength, sacrificing some of her own dreams to provide for her family.
Her perseverance led her to Establish an in- home care agency called (MeriMati )in honour to both her grandmothers Merida and Matilde. Highlighting her resilience and the strong bond within her family
